Treatment of Loose Dentures

Many people who are suffering because of loose dentures will try simple treatments at home before they seek the advice of a dentist. There are dozens of different types of denture adhesive on the market and these all work well if your false teeth are only slightly loose, or perhaps a bit loose on one part of the jaw. However, if the problems that are causing your loose dentures are significant, or if the loosening process has been going on for some time, then it might be time to find a more permanent solution.

Is treatment expensive?

It can be expensive to get a whole new set of dentures. However, there are a number of procedures that can help secure your existing false teeth so that you don’t suffer any more of the problems associated with loose dentures, without having to invest in a whole new set. Many of these treatments are quite expensive too, but still cheaper than new false teeth and they will secure your dentures in place for many years. Procedures like implants, bridges and denture realignment are all alternative options to starting from scratch with your false teeth.

What are the advantages and disadvantages?

All these procedures have different advantages and disadvantages, and not all of them may be suitable for your particular problem or your mouth. Implants need a strong jaw bone in which to anchor themselves, and some people require extra surgery before this can happen, or are just not suitable cases at all for the treatment. Make sure you explore all the options, and all the potential side effects, with your dentist before choosing to go ahead with an expensive procedure to fix your loose dentures.

Be prepared for some short-term discomfort and minor problems with any of these treatments. They won’t fix your loose dentures overnight and you may find that things get a little worse before they get better. Many of the procedures mentioned above will cause some pain in the immediate aftermath, but this will usually wear off after a few days. You may be restricted in what you can eat for a period of time, but if your dentures are so loose that you are going through one of these extra treatments than you are probably unable to eat many of the foods you enjoy anyway!
